I use English names wherever possible, and for the rest I use the local variations when I know them. John/Juan I's rule over Portugal was contested by his brother-in-law John/Joao, who eventually won out. If you're wondering where the numbering comes from, here is the preceding page...
The early counts of Castile are Fernan Gonzalez, Garcia I, Sancho, Garcia II, and Ferdinand I. Ferdinand is the son of Munia, daughter of Count Sancho, and King Sancho III of Navarre. My main source is "Dynasties of the World" by John E. Morby, but I also used "History of Portugal" by A. H. de Oliveira Marques.
Oh, and one last thing... I have several ideas in mind for my next culinary adventure: a simplified feijoada (sort of a Portuguese-Brazilian chili with pork & beans), kritharaki (Greek-Cypriot chicken & orzo pasta in a tomato sauce), and chakapuli (a Georgian meat, plum, and herb stew). Feel free to weigh in and cast a vote.
